Ingredients

For 2 servings

  • fresh sugarcane2 pc
  • lime1 whole
  • fresh ginger1 inch
  • black salt1/4 tsp
  • mint leaves10 pc
  • water1 cup
  • ice cubes4 pc
  • sugar (optional)1 tbsp
  • lemon juice (optional)1 tbsp
  • cardamom powder (optional)1/4 tsp

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Begin by selecting fresh sugarcane pieces. They should be firm and juicy; look for a light green color. Cut the sugarcane into manageable lengths, approximately 12 inches each, for easy juicing.

  2. 2

Using a sugarcane juicer, feed the pieces into the machine. If you don’t have a juicer, you can use a heavy-duty blender, but this may require more effort to extract the juice. Collect the juice in a bowl or jug, aiming for about 2 cups of fresh sugarcane juice.

  3. 3

Once the juice is extracted, strain it through a fine mesh sieve into another container. This step removes any pulp or fibrous material, giving you a smooth beverage. You want a clear liquid with no residue.

  4. 4

Squeeze the juice of one whole lime into the sugarcane juice. This adds a refreshing tang that complements the sweetness of the cane. Stir well to combine the flavors, ensuring the lime juice is evenly distributed.

  5. 5

Grate a one-inch piece of fresh ginger and add it to the mixture. Ginger adds a spicy kick that enhances the drink's overall flavor profile. Allow it to infuse for a minute before moving to the next step.

  6. 6

Add 1/4 teaspoon of black salt to the juice. This not only enhances the taste but also provides a unique savory note, balancing the sweetness of the cane sugar.

  7. 7

Tear about 10 mint leaves and add them to the juice. Mint offers a refreshing aroma and flavor, making the drink even more invigorating. Let the mixture sit for another minute to allow the mint to infuse.

  8. 8

If you prefer a sweeter beverage, now is the time to add 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir thoroughly until it dissolves completely. Adjust sweetness to your liking by adding more sugar if desired.

  9. 9

For an added zing, you can also mix in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. This is optional but recommended for those who enjoy a more citrusy flavor.

  10. 10

Prepare serving glasses by adding 2-3 ice cubes to each. Pour the strained sugarcane juice over the ice, filling the glasses to the brim. This not only cools the drink but also makes it more refreshing.

  11. 11

Finally, garnish each glass with a sprinkle of cardamom powder if using, and a few whole mint leaves on top for presentation. Serve immediately and enjoy the fresh, invigorating taste of authentic sugarcane juice.

Pro Tips

  • •

Ensure the sugarcane is fresh for the best flavor and sweetness.

  • •

Serve the juice chilled with a hint of lime for added zest.

  • •

Strain the juice through a fine mesh to remove any fibrous bits.

  • •

Experiment with adding fresh mint leaves for a refreshing twist.

Variations

  • →

For a sugar-free option, use stevia or another natural sweetener.

  • →

Add a regional twist by including spices like cardamom or black salt.

  • →

Swap out sugarcane for fresh pomegranate or orange juice for a different flavor profile.
