The Story

Fish fingers are a beloved snack in many cultures, often enjoyed as a quick meal or party appetizer. In Pakistan, they evoke memories of family gatherings, where the crispy, golden exterior gives way to tender fish, embodying the warmth and hospitality of home-cooked meals.

Ingredients

For 4 servings

  • white fish fillets (like cod or haddock)500 g
  • all-purpose flour1 cup
  • eggs2 whole
  • breadcrumbs1 cup
  • fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped2 tbsp
  • garlic powder1 tsp
  • onion powder1 tsp
  • paprika1 tsp
  • salt1 tsp
  • black pepper1/2 tsp
  • lemon juice1 tbsp
  • oil for frying500 ml
  • chili powder1/2 tsp
  • fresh lemon wedges4 pc
  • tartar sauceto taste whole

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Start by preparing the fish fillets. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Cut the fillets into finger-sized strips, approximately 2-3 cm wide.

  2. 2

In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and chili powder. Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed throughout the flour.

  3. 3

In another bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them until fully combined. You can add a pinch of salt to the eggs for extra flavor.

  4. 4

In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs and mix in the chopped fresh coriander. This will give your fish fingers an aromatic touch.

  5. 5

Now, take each fish finger strip and coat it in the seasoned flour first, ensuring it’s fully covered. Shake off any excess flour before dipping it into the whisked eggs.

  6. 6

After the egg dip, roll the fish fingers in the bread crumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well. Set aside on a plate or tray.

  7. 7

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. To check if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of bread into the oil; if it sizzles and bubbles, the oil is hot enough.

  8. 8

Carefully add the fish fingers to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to avoid burning.

  9. 9

Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the fish fingers from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

  10. 10

While the fish fingers are resting, squeeze fresh lemon juice over them for added flavor. Serve immediately with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side.

  11. 11

Enjoy your homemade fish fingers as a delightful snack or appetizer, perfect for dipping!

Pro Tips

  • •

Ensure the fish is properly dried before coating to help the batter adhere better.

  • •

Use a combination of ghee and butter for a richer flavor.

  • •

Let the coated fish rest in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before frying to help the coating set.

  • •

Serve with a tangy dipping sauce like tamarind chutney or a yogurt-based sauce for added flavor.

Variations

  • →

Substitute fish with chicken for a poultry twist.

  • →

Add local spices like ajwain or cumin to the spice mix for a regional flair.

  • →

Use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a dietary adaptation.
