Ingredients

For 2 servings

  • bread (preferably white or brioche)4 pc
  • eggs2 whole
  • milk1/2 cup
  • sugar2 tbsp
  • vanilla extract1 tsp
  • cardamom powder1/2 tsp
  • cinnamon powder1/2 tsp
  • salta pinch pinch
  • ghee or unsalted butter2 tbsp
  • chopped pistachios2 tbsp
  • chopped almonds2 tbsp
  • honeyto taste to taste
  • fresh fruits (banana or berries)to taste to taste
  • rose water1/2 tsp

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

In a medium bowl, crack the '2' eggs and whisk them thoroughly until the yolks and whites are combined, creating a uniform mixture. This should take about 1 minute.

  2. 2

Add '1/2' cup of milk to the eggs, followed by '2' tbsp of sugar, '1' tsp of vanilla extract, '1/2' tsp of cardamom powder, '1/2' tsp of cinnamon powder, and a pinch of salt. Whisk everything together until the mixture is smooth and well-blended, which should take another minute.

  3. 3

Take '4' pieces of bread and dip each slice into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Allow the bread to soak for about 30 seconds on each side, so it absorbs the flavors and moisture, but be careful not to let it get too soggy.

  4. 4

In a non-stick skillet, heat '2' tbsp of ghee or unsalted butter over medium heat until it melts and starts to bubble slightly. This should take about 1-2 minutes. The butter should be hot but not browned.

  5. 5

Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet, ensuring they do not overlap. Cook for about '2-3' minutes on one side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy. You can gently lift a corner to check for the desired color.

  6. 6

Flip the bread slices carefully with a spatula and cook the other side for another '2-3' minutes until it is also golden brown. The aroma of the spices and the buttery scent will fill your kitchen during this time.

  7. 7

Once both sides are cooked, remove the French toast from the skillet and place it on a plate. You can keep them warm in a low oven while you finish cooking the remaining slices if necessary.

  8. 8

For serving, drizzle honey over the French toast generously according to your taste. Then, sprinkle '2' tbsp of chopped pistachios and '2' tbsp of chopped almonds on top for added crunch and flavor.

  9. 9

Garnish with fresh fruits like sliced bananas or berries for a refreshing touch. A light mist of '1/2' tsp of rose water will add a delicate fragrance, enhancing the overall experience.

  10. 10

Serve the French Toast Desi Style immediately while it's warm. Enjoy this delightful fusion breakfast that combines the classic French toast with aromatic spices and textures from the subcontinent!

Pro Tips

  • •

Use day-old bread for better texture and to absorb the flavors more effectively.

  • •

For a richer taste, try using a mix of ghee and butter.

  • •

Ensure the onions are caramelized properly to enhance the sweetness and depth of flavor.

  • •

Experiment with different fresh herbs like mint or cilantro for a unique twist.

Variations

  • →

Replace ghee with olive oil for a lighter option.

  • →

Add a regional twist by incorporating spices like garam masala for a more robust flavor profile.

  • →

Swap out onions for finely chopped tomatoes or bell peppers for a different texture and taste.
